UK Plug-In Solar Rules: the 2026 Position

Qualifying plug-in solar becomes lawful in Great Britain on 27 August 2026. That sentence needs four important qualifications.

01

Great Britain, not automatically all UK nations. Northern Ireland has a separate electricity and regulatory framework.

02

The inverter ceiling is 800VA. Panel wattage and inverter apparent power are different measures.

03

Approved equipment and registration still matter. A familiar plug alone does not prove compliance.

04

Planning limits still apply. The 2026 planning change excludes mounting on wooden fences, gates and walls.

What the law changes

The regulations create a specific route for small, low-carbon generating systems connected through approved plug-in arrangements. They come into force on 27 August 2026.

The government’s interim product specification sets the electrical boundary. Network registration and installation requirements remain part of the route.

Do not buy on a headline

Ask for the exact model, its evidence of conformity and the intended registration process.
